4-H Beef Cattle

The Tennessee 4-H Livestock program offers many opportunities for 4-Her’s to exhibit beef cattle throughout the state. Youth may participate in livestock judging competitions, skillathon contests, 4-H Project Achievement, Beef Quiz Bowl, and more.

In December of 2014, the Monroe County Livestock team won the National Livestock contest in Phoenix, Arizona. The competition saw 4-H and FFA teams from Arizona, California, and Tennessee. The teams competed by judging classes of beef cattle, goats, sheep, and swine. After the judging portion of the contest, the youth gave two sets of oral reasons.

Swine

There are many many opportunities for 4-Her’s to exhibit swine throughout the state such as livestock judging competitions, skillathon contests, and 4-H Project Achievement. All youth exhibitors at the State Market Hog Show must be Youth Pork Quality Assurance Certified. The Youth Pork Quality Assurance Plus program has two major educational components: Food Safety and Animal Well-Being. You can work with your 4-H agents to become PQA certified.

Below are upcoming show events.

Poultry

Participants in the 4-H Chick Chain receive 12 baby chicks in the spring. They are required to house, feed, and care for them properly. Later in the year, they bring some of their pullets to the Monroe County Poultry Show and Sale. These pullets are then judged and auctioned. The remaining pullets are the 4-H member’s to keep. Besides prize money and ribbons that are awarded based on the quality of the pullets, 4-H members gain important skills from having the responsibility of caring for their animals. You will be provided with the information you need when you sign up such as the UT Publication Growing Blue Ribbon Pullets.
